Finding The Way
'Finding The Way' is a lament of the destruction people unleash on each other and the natural world, but also a celebration of the beauty remaining within and around us. If we take the time to recognize this beauty, the world no longer seems as cold and dark as we tend to believe watching the news every night. It features original music, available here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/zachaffolter/finding-the-way
Breaking Through The Clouds
This short film is about the captive orca Tokitae, also known as Lolita, who is held at the Miami Seaquarium. It is a fictional narrative in which she battles with her feelings of despair being in solitude for so long. Lolita remembers her life before her capture. These memories soon consume her and suddenly her mother's last words echo through her mind. She realizes that “love cannot be confined” and this allows her to be “unbreakable forevermore.” The film premiered at Phinfest, and was an official selection for Friday Harbor Film Festival and Miami Independant Film Festival.
Black Water
Black Water is a short, fictional narrative film that explores how killer whales may feel in a captive environment, takes a critical look at the issue of keeping them and other animals in captivity, and above all provides an inspirational message for people who struggle through depression. You will notice that the mood of the film becomes progressively darker – I like to think of it as falling and sinking deeper into the ocean until you hit the bottom, unable to reach back to the surface. The film illuminates our emotions, how they can pull each of us down, and that in the end there is meaning to our struggles and our lives. Its title was inspired by these themes.
Horror Show - Orkid's Sad Story
This video is about the captive-born killer whale Orkid, who resides at SeaWorld San Diego. It describes her sad life and existence in captivity, and begs the question of whether this is the way these animals should live. Her story is filled with sorrow and is a perfect example of the detrimental effects of captivity on these beautiful creatures.
